Our beloved 4 year old Westie gal just spent 3 days in ICU because she got into a pocketbook and ate 3 pieces of Trident sugarless gum. The ingredient Zylitol is extrememly toxic and at 200 mg /piece the 3 pieces she ate was a dangerously high dose. The vet said that they get dogs coming in to the ER having seizures after just one piece. The Zylitol causes the blood sugar levels to plunge causing the seizures and liver toxicity. Zoey is home now and thankfully is doing well but she will remain on meds for her liver and will have to have her levels checked in the future to determine if there is any long term damage.
Please help me circulate this e-mail in hopes of preventing any future tragedies!!
